What successful ways have you found for events to make a conscious effort to “go green”?
Answer from Kristy Poore, CMP, CTA National Sales Account Executive Destination Ann Arbor
Here are some ideas that I have seen groups use in an effort to “go green” with their events.
- Many Organizations will put right in their RFP’s their green initiatives, so that the venues and their vendors are aware and can work with them to achieve their sustainability goals.
- Many hotels are now working with Clean the World which collects and recycles soap and shampoo products discarded by the hospitality industry and donates them to impoverished global communities.
- Rethinking the use of bottled water. Cut down on the recyclable kind and opt for a reusable bottle instead. Brand it with your logo to make it a desirable keepsake. Put out fruit flavored waters as a refreshing option for attendees.
- Go Paperless. Eliminate printed invitations, programs and agendas and anything else that can be communicated electronically. Smartphones, tablets make it easy to stay connected with the event and can be enriched with the use of customized mobile apps.

President-Elect
Alanna Klomp, CMP, has been with the West Michigan Whitecaps, a minor league affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, for 19 years. She has held numerous positions with the baseball club and is currently the Corporate Event Sales Manager. Her primary responsibilities include selling the more than 100 non-baseball events, such as company picnics, meetings, trade shows, training seminars, holiday parties and weddings, that occur at the ballpark. When she is not selling events at the ballpark she is planning events off-site for both the West Michigan Whitecaps and the Whitecaps Community Foundation. Events include the Foundation’s annual Fundraising Banquet and Golf Outing as well as the 2014 Midwest League All-Star Game Reception and various private parties.
Alanna has been Director of Education for 2 years, Vice President of Education for 1 year and is currently serving as President Elect for the Michigan Chapter. She loves spending time with her husband Rich and two children, Izzy and Nathan. Together they enjoy traveling and outdoor activities such as kayaking, hiking and camping. In her spare time she volunteers at her kid’s school, for Kids Food Basket and Habitat for Humanity. When time permits, her hobbies include photography, baking, knitting and exercising.
